Antimicrobial Peptides & Innate Immunity in Otits Media
The goal of this project is investigate the role of innate immunity in otitis media and identify methods to augment these defense mechanisms in order to develop a novel approach for the treatment and/or prevention of otitis media.

Improving Patient Care via Proteomics Based, Microbe-Specific Detection of Chronic Rhinosinusitis
The goals of this project are to 1) identify patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), specifically due to the presence of NTHI biofilms, utilizing a high throughput proteomics-based assay, and 2) test a priori assay that will predict the development of CRS in an in vivo chinchilla model. Results from this project may lead to the development of biomarkers to be used as clinical diagnostic tools to diagnose CRS at very early stages of disease progression, and aid in the development non-surgical therapies for CRS.

 Research Projects Available

The Division of Sinus and Allergy encourages applications from scientists at all levels of training with an interest in eradicating sinus and allergic diseases, including high school and undergraduate trainees, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral fellows, and independent investigators to join our research team for temporary and permanent assignments.  For a list of our current research projects, please contact our Division.

 Research Highlights

Currently, our Division is performing research in conjunction with Dr. Lauren Bakaletz, Director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Studies, The Ohio State University, to examine how non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) causes chronic rhinosinusitis.  Through this research, we are developing tests that will allow us to identify patients with sinusitis due to pathogenic bacteria or other causes, reduce the number of prescriptions given to treat the common cold and acute viral rhinosinusitis, and develop better treatments to eradicate bacterial sinusitis via minimally invasive and/or non-surgical means. This research is supported from numerous partners, including local donors as well as multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health.
