Basic research within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery focuses on head and neck oncology, NF2/vestibular schwannomas, and virtual temporal bone simulation.
The department has six faculty members whose mission is to promote basic and clinical research focused on diseases of the ear. Currently the six faculty members who comprise the group have been awarded four NIH grants and three grants from private foundations or industry totaling $3.3 million dollars.
The department has made significant contributions and its top ongoing research programs include:
New grants in the department were recently awarded to Greg Wiet, MD and Brad Welling, MD. Wiet’s work, with collaborator Don Stredney, is highlighted in the article on the “Multi-center Testing of the Virtual Temporal Bone Dissector Simulator." The potential for education of all otolaryngology residents and for preoperative simulation with this technology is encouraging. Deciphering the underlying molecular causes of vestibular schwannomas in our laboratory has moved forward this year as well through the collaboration of Long-Sheng Chang, PhD and a host of dedicated research colleagues. Dr. James Lang, PhD has secured funding to investigate Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas.
