The OSU Department of Otolaryngology Balance Disorders Program offers state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for patients with vestibular dysfunction (ear-related dizziness). Diagnostic testing includes audiograms when necessary, videonystagmography (VNG), rotation chair, platform posturography, and vestibular myogenic evoked potentials (VEMP). Specialized vestibular rehabilitation services are also available. Our mission is to promote a better understanding of dizziness and related conditions through an integrated partnership between clinicians, researchers, and medical staff. Dedicated personnel are available to facilitate timely evaluation and management.

Specific causes of dizziness addressed by our program include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Ototoxicity
  • Migraine-related Dizziness
  • Perilymph Fistula
  • Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Syndrome
  • Multifactorial Dizziness
  • Vestibulopathy of Aging
  • Acoustic Neuroma and Other Cranial Base Tumor

Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery    
Dr. Barin has a joint appointment with the Speech and Hearing Science Department and is also affiliated with the Biomedical Engineering Program. 
Dr. Barin received his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif (Arya-Mehr) University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.  He received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Electrical/Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University.  His interests include vestibular function testing and human postural control.

Vinita Brinda, Balance Lab Coordinator / Vestibular Technician
Vinita has over 15 years of experience performing vestibular studies at The Ohio State University. She also assists Dr. Barin in teaching graduate students of the OSU Speech & Hearing Program in learning how to perform and interpret vestibular tests.

Helen Sprague, P.T., Coordinator of the Vestibular Rehabilitation Program
Helen is a graduate of The Ohio State University, and after several years of clinical practice in orthopedics and pain management, came to the Balance Disorders Clinic in 1997 to specialize in Vestibular Rehabilitation. She holds appointments as Clinical Instructor and Auxiliary Faculty in the Division of Physical Therapy, School of Allied Medical Professions at Ohio State, and is a guest lecturer in Vestibular Rehabilitation for the Physical Therapy Program at the College of Mt. St. Joseph, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Karen Smith , PA-C
Karen Smith Physician AssistantGraduated from University of Nebraska with a Masters of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies, with an emphasis in Neurotology, 2006.  Worked as PA in San Antonio 3 years in otology--working with patients with ear related problems to include vertigo.
