Matthew Old, MD


Matthew Old, MDTitle: Matthew Old, M.D, F.A.C.S is an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He was recently named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 2010, Dr. Old was awarded The Joan Bisesi Memorial Career Development Grant and the NIH/OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Pilot Grant and in 2013 the Comprehensive Cancer Center Viral Oncology Program grant. He received the 2011 “Forty under 40 Award” from Business First magazine who each year recognizes the top forty people in the Central Ohio business world who show professional drive and remain active in their communities. He has been named to the 2012-2015 Best Doctors in America list.


Undergraduate/Medical School: Dr. Old graduated with honors from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology. During his time at Stanford he received the Dean’s Award for Academic Achievement; Firestone Medal for Excellence in Research, two Research Grants from Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Landreth Foundation, as well as being a member of the NCAA and PAC-10 championship men’s swimming team. He graduated with an MD from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School in 2003 where he was elected to the AOA Honor Society and awarded the Walter G. Sterling Award for Excellence, Outstanding Student Award in Internal Medicine, Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine, Neurobiology and Anatomy, and Physical Diagnosis and an American Pediatric Society Summer Fellowship. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan in 2008 and received two Merle Lawrence Research Awards. He completed a Cranial Base, Microvascular Reconstruction, and Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He is currently an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the American Head and Neck Society. He serves on the Academy’s Head and Neck Education Committee to ensure that resident, fellows, and active members are receiving the best and most up-to-date training in the area of head and surgery and oncology. He also serves on the American Head and Neck Society Microvascular Reconstructive Committee.
 

Surgical Interests: Dr. Old’s surgical and clinical expertise are in head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstruction, skin defect reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, endoscopic and open skull base surgery, robotic surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, Zenker’s diverticulum, melanoma and other aggressive malignancies of the skin, subglottic and tracheal stenosis, carotid body tumors and paragangliomas, facial paralysis. Dr. Old is involved in writing book chapters and journal articles and presenting at national meetings on reconstruction of the head and neck, robotic surgery, paragangliomas and carotid body tumors, and avoidance and management of parapharyngeal space complications when removing tumors.
Dr. Old and the head and neck team are committed to providing the best surgical and multidisciplinary care for their patients at an institution with one of the highest volumes of head and neck cancer patients in the country. He has advanced the surgical field of head and neck surgery in many areas and continues to remain at the forefront of cutting edge treatments and technologies. Dr. Old runs the weekly Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Board consisting of the head and neck surgeons, neuroradiologists, radiation and medical oncologists, dentists, pathologists, speech pathologists, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, and research staff. Every head and neck cancer patient is reviewed by the Board to provide a consensus recommendation. He is not only committed to the treatment of the disease, but to the treatment of the individual as a whole as he and his staff helps guide them through this difficult time in their lives.

Research Interests: Dr. Old’s research interests are oncolytic viral therapy, HPV and head and neck cancer, and novel therapeutics for head and neck cancer including hyperbaric oxygen. His research lab focuses on novel therapeutics for head and neck cancer. In addition, Dr. Old is working to open multiple clinical trials with oncolytic viruses for head and neck cancer and metastatic disease.
